In 2020, I graduated from Durham University with a First Class Degree in Law and have since become a tutor with over 3500 hours of tutoring experience. My aim is to teach my students what teachers never told me at school. Namely, the most effective, research-backed way to revise. I have now converted my entire method into an eBook that covers how to make concise and effective revision notes that can be used to memorise vast quantities of information in a relatively short space of time. Using this method ensures that students stay actively engaged in their studies so that they do not waste precious time that would be better spent on extracurricular activities.

It has not been long since I was studying at school myself, and I acutely remember the struggle of learning how to learn. Despite the need to revise often being stressed by school teachers, they very rarely divulged much useful information on what ‘revision’ actually means.

If you look up revision methods, the most commonly promoted ones are using mind maps, creating flashcards and highlighting textbooks. I tried each of these but found them to be far too time consuming to be used to learn all the content. I also found that the information would not stick in my brain by simply using those methods alone.

After having performed quite poorly during my year 12 assessments, I realised that there was no way I was going to be able to learn all the content I needed to know using the conventional methods. This dissatisfaction prompted me to do a deep dive to research the very best method of revision, which involved trudging through every revision article and book I could get my hands on. Eventually, I came across some psychology backed research that showed the exact requirements of consuming and remembering large quantities of information in a relatively short space of time. Building on this research, I devised a study method that is unlike anything you can find by simply googling the best way to revise.

I don’t consider myself to be naturally the brightest, and I was definitely never one of the smarter kids in the class. However, I used this method to successfully secure 5 A Levels at grades A*AAAB (in Sociology, Biology, Business, Geography and Chemistry) and then a First Class Law degree from Durham.

This strategy can be used all the way from Year 7 through to University. I recommend that students familiarise themselves with it as early as possible so as to master the art of studying before they reach their GCSEs and A Levels.
